Bulk Packed Mealworms – Tenebrio Molitor
When you think of feeder food for critters, the first thing that pops into your mind is probably mealworms. There is a good reason for this. Since they are high in protein and fat, they made a favorite food source for such varied critters as Bearded Dragons, Geckos, Anoles, frogs, toads, and salamanders.
Caring for Live and Active Mealworms
The first step in caring for mealworms is to provide them with a suitable habitat. Mealworms need a place that is dark, dry, and warm. An excellent way to create this environment is to use a plastic container with a lid. Drill some small holes in the top for ventilation, and then line the bottom of the container with paper towels. Another option is to use a cardboard box lined with newspaper. Just make sure that whatever container you use has plenty of airflows.
Next, you will need to add food and water for your mealworms. You can either buy commercial mealworm food or make your own by grinding up dry dog food or cat food. Place the food in a shallow dish or on a piece of paper towel, and add some water to keep it moist. You will also need to provide a source of calcium for your mealworms. This can be in the form of calcium carbonate powder, crushed eggshells, or cuttlebone powder. Just sprinkle a little bit on top of the food.
Once you have set up their habitat, you can start adding mealworms. You can purchase them online or at your local pet store. Start with just a few, and then increase the number as needed. Mealworms reproduce rapidly, so you will likely end up with more than you started with!
Storing Your Mealworms
Once your live mealworms arrive, they can be placed in your refrigerator, which will not kill them. For your mealworms to last for several months, you will need to take them out of the fridge once per week for several hours to allow them to feed.
